 After the war, life slowly returned to normal. I found work as a nurse and enjoyed helping people and making a difference
in their lives.
Unfortunately, our luck ran out. In 1945, the Germans discovered our hiding place and arrested us all. We were taken to a prison camp, where we were kept for several months. It was a miserable time, but we tried to stay strong and support each other as best we could.
When the war finally ended in 1945, we were released from the camp and allowed to return home. It was a bitter- sweet moment, as we were happy to be free but devastated by the loss of our brothers. We eventually learned that they had both died in a concentration camp, and it was a blow that our family never fully recovered from.
After the war, life slowly returned to nor- mal. I found work as a nurse and enjoyed helping people and making a difference in their lives. But I knew that I wanted more. I had always dreamed of travelling and seeing the world, and I knew that I couldn’t do that in the Netherlands.
