Skateboarders, Cause, Effect and Responsibility
You’re standing on your skateboard and you bend your knees, press down on the tail of your board and what happens? Your board starts to rise ver- tically, as you jump up and in the same direction as you are rolling and simultaneously slide your front foot forward, allowing the friction of the grip tape to level out your board. You’ve left the ground, you’ve just done an ollie. You’ve practised this millions of times before right? Or you’ve the tail of your skateboard on the coping and put one foot on after the other, lean forward and drop into a transition? Or put one foot on the deck bolts and take a push to start rolling?
Anything that you do while you are on your skateboard is a prime example of cause and effect. Your movements with your skateboard send out energy which can be classified as the cause, while landing and rolling away can be classified as the effect. Through skateboarding’s diversity and accessibility, people have different ways to interact and engage with their skateboard and the environment in which they find themselves in. Through changing the cause, skateboarders are able to express different effects in their skateboard- ing. These causes and effects are what make the process of skateboarding so enthralling and thrilling!
There is a wide range of variables that can influence the cause or the pre-de- termining factors of skateboard trick composition and this is something that
