THE ENDLESS WAVE | PART TWO
Afterword by Nathan
The satisfaction and delight in writing The Endless Wave can be com- pared to the feeling of having a great day Skating where everything flowed, something new was learnt or a trick was filmed. The Endless Wave was a truly remarkable process and something that I never imagined doing as a skateboarder and an author.
From the initial moments of its inception all the way through to the end of writing, the words poured out every writing session without any writer’s block. I had taken a break from writing for quite some time and I was looking to begin a new project once I had more clarity on the direction, intention and purpose behind it. I could liken this experience to the times when I haven’t skated for a period of time due to injuries, family, school, work or other cir- cumstances and the return to skateboarding is like the spark of an explosion of expression for skateboarding.
When I wrote my sections for this book, I was recovering from a second knee surgery and had plenty of time to reflect on skateboarding and its meaning in my life. The time that I spent off board helped me to remain connected with skateboarding in another way and was a pathway to discover what it truly meant to be a skateboarder. The elements of skateboarding analyzed in End- less Wave felt like great metaphors for exploring different elements of life, death and beyond.
