THE ENDLESS WAVE | PART ONE
A Planned Death
Here in Canada, medical assistance in death (MAID) is legal. At this point, it only accounts for less than 2% of all deaths. But, the numbers are growing. There is a huge amount of information available on the web about this subject. Depending on where you live, it could be either completely outlawed or 100% legal.
From what I have seen in my role as a funeral director’s assistant, people who decide they do not wish to continue living are grateful for the opportunity to make such a decision. The places where I have picked up the deceased are tranquil and peaceful. Family members are both upset and relieved. Overall the feeling that I get is one of peace.
This might strike some readers as odd. How can there be peace if the person has given up at least trying to fight for his or her life? I think that many baby boomers are putting quality of life above quantity of life. They have seen what happened with their parents and many are not prepared to go through the same experiences.
The reality is that baby boomers changed child rearing, education, music, film and politics (to name just a few things). I sense that death will be no exception. The oldest baby boomer turned 75 in 2021. The vast majority are entering their mid 60’s and early 70’s. There is a tsunami of grey coming and they steamroll over everything — including death and dying.
